On Wednesday 12th October 1910, Streatham News reported that Sir Ernest Shackleton c.v.o, an Antarctic explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, gave his lecture ‘Nearest The South Pole’ at St Margaret the Queen Church.

Ernest generously agreed to give all proceeds made from ticket sales from his lecture, to the building fund of St Margaret’s church. This generous offer then went on to help with the continued progress of the new church building project.

This fantastic Streatham news article was shared with us by The Streatham Society who work so hard to share interesting stories, pictures and the history of Streatham and our community.

Thank you to John Brown for sharing this article with us.
